about

Many believed that the original location of DATA labs was on the North Yorkshire coast, and indeed there is a lot of evidence to support this theory. The 'Cinder Track' is notable for running along a stretch of coast between Scarborough and Whitby, intersecting a number of disused concrete buildings and structures.

Until recently, these were believed to have been used by the RAF and Military during wartime and for covert operations, but new evidence suggests they were actually better equipped to deal with audio experimentation and sonic testing.

In 1987, in an interview with notable historian Fairweather Banks, Martyn failed to comment on these theories and simply stated that the 'Cinder Track' was just an inspiration for this song and had no link to DATAStream's activities pre-1986 or otherwise.
